Context
'Lone Tree in Winter' was created as part of a collaboration with acclaimed poet John Powls, resulting in the collection of poems and artworks 'North Sea to the East', published by HALSTAR (the arts imprint of the Halsgrove Group) in December 2020. John Powls responded to this artwork with the poem 'Teenage Heartbreak Too, So nearly a renga for Sylvia Plath'. The second in a set of three poems and three artworks inspired by a lone tree close to Roseberry Topping, the later a distinctive landmark of North Yorkshire, the former a distinct mark on the life of the poet. Note, Richard arranges this set in chronological order (Autumn, Winter, Spring) leading to the joy of spring, whereas John reverses the order to represent the act of reminiscing.
